Underground Drainage for Tampa Bay Homes
Gutters collect the water. Underground drainage is what carries it away. McCloud Gutter Protection designs and installs buried downspout drain lines, French drains and catch basins that move roof runoff and standing water away from your foundation, driveway, pool deck and landscaping. We serve homeowners across Tampa Bay, including Tampa, Tampa Palms, Wesley Chapel, Riverview, Lakeland and Bradenton.

Why Downspouts Alone Aren’t Enough in Florida
A single downspout can dump hundreds of gallons at the base of your house during one summer storm. On Florida’s sandy soil that water washes out the fill under slabs and walkways, floods planting beds, leaves mud along the foundation and feeds the standing water mosquitoes breed in. Splash blocks help a little. A buried drain line solves it.
- Foundation and slab protection. Keeps water from saturating the soil against the house and under the slab edge.
- No more swampy yard. Low spots, side yards between houses and areas under the lanai drain instead of holding water for days.
- Protects hardscape. Stops the undermining that cracks and sinks driveways, pavers and pool decks.
- Clean look. No downspout extensions snaking across the lawn to trip over or mow around.
Drainage Solutions We Install
- Underground downspout drains. Each downspout ties into buried pipe that runs to a pop-up emitter, dry well or approved discharge point well away from the house.
- French drains. Perforated pipe in a gravel trench that collects groundwater and surface water from chronically wet areas and carries it off.
- Catch basins and channel drains. Grated inlets for patios, pool decks, driveways and low spots where water collects.
- Pop-up emitters and dry wells. Discharge points sized for the water volume, placed where the water can soak away safely.
- Downspout upgrades. Larger downspouts, decorative leader heads and rain chains that tie cleanly into the underground system.
Before we recommend anything, we walk the property during or after rain whenever possible and look at where the water actually goes. The right fix depends on your roof layout, soil, grade and where the water can legally and safely discharge.
How a Drainage Project Works
- Free on-site evaluation. We trace the water from roof to yard and identify every problem spot.
- Clear quote. A written plan showing drain routes, inlet locations and discharge points. No hidden fees.
- Installation. Our in-house crews trench, lay and connect the system, then restore sod and landscaping as closely as possible to how we found it.
- Test and walkthrough. We flush the lines, confirm every downspout drains, and walk the finished work with you.

Underground Drainage FAQ
How deep are the drain lines buried? Deep enough to clear mowing and foot traffic and to maintain a steady downhill pitch to the outlet. Depth varies with the run length and the grade of your lot.
Will you tear up my yard? Trenching is unavoidable, but we keep trenches narrow, save the sod where we can, and put everything back. Most yards look normal again within a few weeks.
What is a pop-up emitter? A capped outlet at the end of a drain line that stays closed until water pressure pushes it open. It releases water at ground level away from the house and closes again so debris and pests stay out.
Can underground drains clog? They can if leaves and roof grit wash in. Pairing the system with gutter guards keeps most debris out of the gutters in the first place, and we install cleanouts so lines can be flushed.
Do I need new gutters first? Not always. If your gutters are sound we tie into the existing downspouts. If they are undersized or failing we’ll tell you, because a drainage system is only as good as the gutters feeding it.
